Super Perks for Boston Teachers Should Be Eliminated to Close District’s $63 Million Budget Gap, Prevent Academic Cuts

In Boston, a special fund established in 1968 pays for teachers’ funeral expenses, hearing aids and a softball league as well as legal services that have nothing to do with classroom instruction. In the last school year alone, Boston taxpayers shelled out $1.3 million from the trust to help teachers with wills, bankruptcy, real estate, name changes, and legal defense against some misdemeanor criminal charges, according to the Boston Globe. This year taxpayers will contribute $8.4 million to the teachers’ trust, even as the district faces an anticipated $63 million budget gap that is necessitating the closure or consolidation of 18 schools, the Globe reports.  [more...]

Sarah Palin was excoriated for making the entirely correct observation that when a government controls health care, rationing becomes inevitable.  Democrats squealed like stuck pigs, but dropped the execrable end of life counseling language from ObamaCare. Undeterred, Obama used a recess appointment to afflict us with Dr. Donald Berwick who is unabashed in his affection for the deeply dysfunctional British health care system.  Comrade Berwick heads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and his positions on government control over health care are pretty plain. Durban 3 – Kick this Horror Show Rerun Out of New York

The United Nations General Assembly stayed in session until 4 in the morning to vote 104 to 22, with 33 abstaining, to hold a “Durban 3 ” World Conference Against Racism summit in New York, on September 21, 2011.  Given the rampantly anti-Western and anti-Semitic record of the first two Durban racism conferences, holding this one in New York ten days following the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks would constitute a disgraceful insult to our country. Americans: Beware of Rogue NLRB!

Last week, big labor bosses were provided two early Christmas presents while the nation was being distracted by the theatrics of its “Lame Duck” Congress!  In Beware the Lame Duck, I warned of potential attempts by Obama and his sidekicks Pelosi and Reid to pass some version of the “Employee Free Choice Act” (a/k/a Card Check) by embedding one of its most onerous provisions, employer fines, in a non-related bill as described in the EFCA Update. I have also warned of the Administration’s attempts to pass EFCA through the Backdoor, which could be achieved through use of executive appointments, executive orders and rule changes. It appears that, for Big Labor bosses, it is now Beyond Lame Ducksville and on to Corporate Campaigns with more weapons in their arsenal! [more...]
